The Contractor has reached the final stages of the fit out of the Ritz Krakhaa Hotel. The project is close to completion, and yet the parties are far apart on various elements of the account. The accounts are currently £100M apart and relationships have deteriorated. The disputes involve major subcontract packages, extended time for completion and an allegation of a major defect.

This contract contains a Dispute Advisory Board (DAB). Does this method actually work? Can the disputes be effectively resolved this way? Is it possible for the relationships to survive and even improve between the parties?

The 75th Annual Conference of the African Forum of Civil Engineering Contractors (SAFCEC) was held this year, on 11 November, at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg. David Bordoli of Driver Group Africa was one of the presenters to the audience of over 200 influential engineering professionals. Driver was also represented by Christo de Witt at the conference.

David’s presentation, titled ‘Prediction is very difficult, especially if it’s about the future’, a quote borrowed from physics Nobel Laureate Nils Bohr was not about nuclear fission but about a new method he had developed to predict project completion if no action was taken to change negative trends. The new method is easier to understand and compute than existing ‘earned value’ methods, leading to greater understanding by the whole of the team of the effects of trends and the need for change to ensure timely project completion.

A version of the presentation, adopted for the UK industry, was subsequently presented at the Project Controls Expo in London, England and details of the method are in David’s paper ‘Progress, Position, Prediction – The key to completing projects on time’ which can be obtained by emailing Debby Noome

Driver Group, the global construction consultancy, has had a growth fuelled year since the acquisition of Trett Consulting and the re branding of its expert witness service, DIALES, in 2012.

The consultancy has almost doubled in size, in terms of revenues, employee numbers, and new offices and can now offer unrivalled client support to the engineering and construction industries around the globe.

The last month saw acquisitions of certain assets of PJ Consulting Ltd in Hong Kong and the opening of an office headed up by Peter Ho. This added to the Group’s Asia Pacific network, which also saw new offices open in Brisbane and Perth in 2013. Managing director for Asia Pacific, Alastair Farr said: “I am delighted with this transaction and look forward to continuing to serve PJ Consulting’s clients and ours in Hong Kong and beyond.  This is another significant step in delivering our strategy of expanding our platform in Asia Pacific and providing support to clients in this region operating globally”.

At the start of October, Driver Group acquired the remaining minority interest in Driver Group Africa (DGA) Pty Ltd, making it a wholly owned subsidiary of the Group. Managing director for Africa, John Messenger said: “this acquisition is a positive step for DGA as we come together and more efficiently serve our existing and future clients, delivering value and high standards of expertise and support across the Africa continent.”

And finally…
